Juice Jacking Threats on the Rise — What Travelers Need to Know
As the world reopens and travelers head to airports, train stations, cruise terminals, and hotels, one of the most serious travel alerts for 2025 doesn’t come from a weather report or geopolitical conflict — it comes from a USB port.
This year, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) issued a heightened alert about juice jacking, a type of cyberattack that targets travelers through public USB charging stations. It may sound like something out of a tech thriller, but juice jacking is very real — and it’s happening in airports and public spaces around the world.

Find out how to protect your data and identity while traveling.
At Tour Plan International, we’re always watching out for risks that could disrupt your travel experience — and that includes the invisible kind. This alert demands serious attention, but with awareness and the proper precautions, you can stay safe, connected, and protected wherever you go.
What Is Juice Jacking?
Juice jacking happens when hackers install malicious hardware or software in public charging stations — or even in the cables left behind for travelers to use. Because USB ports are designed to handle both power and data, a compromised port can become a silent gateway for cybercriminals to access your device.
Once you plug in, the attacker may:
- Steal data from your phone or tablet — including contacts, emails, saved passwords, and sensitive documents.
- Install malware that can monitor your activity, access apps, or even lock you out of your device.
- Take remote control of your device, compromising your digital security long after you leave the charging station.
This type of cybercrime targets people who are on the go — distracted, tired, or rushing through terminals. And that’s precisely why travelers must stay vigilant.
How to Protect Yourself from Juice Jacking
At Tour Plan International, we believe the best travel experiences come from planning ahead — and that includes planning your tech safety. Here’s how you can defend against juice jacking:
Use your own charger and plug it into a wall outlet.
Always pack your own adapter and cable and plug directly into a traditional wall outlet. This bypasses any risk of data transfer.
Bring a portable power bank.
Portable battery packs are a traveler’s best friend. They keep your devices charged and eliminate the need to search for outlets in public areas.
Use a USB data blocker.
These tiny, inexpensive devices attach to your charging cable and block all data transfer, allowing only power to pass through.
Choose ‘Charge Only’ if prompted.
Many devices will ask if you want to share data or charge your device. Always select “Charge Only.”
Lock or turn off your device before charging.
A locked or powered-down phone offers fewer opportunities for unauthorized access, even if the port is compromised.
Never use random or unfamiliar charging cables.
Even if you see a cable left in a charging station, do not use it. Bring and use your own every time.
