Would you believe that spending hours in a cramped airplane cabin could appeal to many travelers? Flying at 35,000 feet for an extended period presents a unique set of challenges, from limited mobility to dry air and jet lag. However, with the proper preparation and mindset, long-haul flights can transform a dreaded ordeal into a manageable, even enjoyable part of your travel experience.
In this blog, we’ll explore Tour Plan International’s top ten tips for long-haul flights, designed to help you arrive at your destination feeling refreshed and ready to explore.

Find Comfortable Clothes to Wear on Long Flights
The key to starting your long-haul flight right is dressing comfortably. Opt for loose-fitting layers to quickly adjust to changing cabin temperatures. Leave the jewelry for your destination and choose closed-toed shoes over flip-flops for safety and comfort, especially as feet swell at high altitudes. Consider slip-on shoes or cozy slipper socks to make your journey more comfortable.

Pack Your Carry-On Smartly
Your carry-on is your long-haul lifeline, filled with essentials for health, comfort, and entertainment. Include a change of clothes, toiletries to freshen up, and compression socks to combat swelling. Remember to pack essentials like prescription medications, travel documents, snacks, and a water bottle to stay hydrated.

Find a Way to Sleep as Much as Possible
Maximize your rest onboard by considering a personal travel pillow for neck support. Have you heard about the Trtl Tavel Pillow? Read this media story about the popular pillow that is helping travelers sleep.
Noise-canceling headphones and eye shades can help you tune out the cabin environment. Adjust your sleep schedule in advance to align with your destination’s time zone.
Bring Noise Cancelling Headphones & Entertainment
A long flight is the perfect time to catch up on movies, series, podcasts, or books you want to explore. Check the airline’s in-flight entertainment in advance and download content to your devices as backup.
Remember to bring a portable charger to keep your electronics powered. Even though the airline may advertise USB ports at every seat, they may only sometimes be operational.
Noise-canceling headphones are a top tip from Tour Plan travel advisor Kissy Gordon.
Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate…
The cabin air can be arid, so staying hydrated is crucial. Bring a water bottle to refill after passing security, and consider adding electrolytes for extra hydration. Use lip balm and eye drops to combat dryness and moisturize your skin with lotion.
Move When You Can
Opt for an aisle seat to stretch your legs quickly and take short walks around the cabin. Utilize waiting times for bathroom queues to do some light stretching. Keeping your blood circulating is critical to avoiding discomfort and potential health issues.
Even wiggling your toes or moving your legs is helpful. This is also an excellent time to mention compression socks for long flights again. For tips on using compression socks during a long flight, read this story from the Travel Channel.
Think Ahead to Your Final Destination (Or for a Long Layover)
To combat jet lag, resist the urge to nap if you land during daylight. Adjust to the local time zone as quickly as possible by engaging in light activity or exploring your surroundings.
Take a moment to research the airport where you will land and create a plan. What are your transportation options? Ensure that your travel documents are in your carry-on and easy to access.
If you have a long layover, what food, entertainment, and rest options are available? You may need to pre-book an in-airport hotel for a shower and nap.
What’s the Best Seat to Book for a Long Flight?
If you are able, consider options for paid seating, Premium Economy seats or Business Class. Keep in mind that product names / benefits for each service may differ between airlines.
Consider your personal needs when choosing a seat. Front or over-the-wing seats are preferable for more legroom and a smoother ride. Emergency exit rows offer extra legroom but come with restrictions.
Take Your Snacks
Airline meals may only sometimes align with your hunger or dietary preferences.
- Plan on receiving your first snack or in-flight meal at least 1.5 hours into your long-haul flight.
- Do not depend on purchasing food after you pass through security at the airport. You may be faced with long lines and miss the opportunity to buy snacks.
- Ensure that your packed snacks are security-compliant. Bring pre-packaged, non-liquid snacks in the original packaging.
Packing your snacks ensures access to food that suits your tastes and needs, making your flight experience more enjoyable.
