As travel advisors, we often receive questions about passport applications and renewals. Beyond the application process, there are many passport facts to understand. In this guide, we will answer the top passport questions received at the Tour Plan office.
How much does it cost and what do I need to submit to obtain or renew my passport?
The first step in obtaining either a new or renewed passport is to visit the US Department of State page specifically designed for passport issuance and FAQs. As of October 2023, an application is required to be accompanied by an original birth certificate (easily obtained from your individual state of birth’s Department of Vital Statistics) or other evidence of US citizenship, a specific size photograph (which can be taken officially at wholesale stores, drug stores and some US Post Offices) and a personal check or money order for processing and mailing fees. Applications can be completed online, printed and completed manually or be obtained by visiting US Post Offices. Processing an application (especially for first time applicants) can be easily accomplished by making an appointment with a local US Post Office that accepts Passport applications. A list of specific Post Office locations can be found on the website referenced above.
My travel partner needs to apply for a passport, and I need to renew mine. How long will the process take?
In early October 2023, the process wait time is approximately 8-11 weeks for standard delivery. Expedited delivery provides an estimated 5-week process. For up-to-date estimated processing time, click here.

Help! I applied for my passport, and I have not received it yet. I am leaving on a vacation in ten days. Can anyone help me?
If you’re scheduled to leave for a trip in seven days or less and you’re still waiting to receive your passport, make sure to contact a customer service representative at the National Passport Information Center. They can help you track the status of your passport. Additionally, note that you can always contact your elected Congressman for assistance.
Is it OK to use a third-party expedited passport service?
Yes, it is OK to use a third-party service. Read the government’s official response here. Please feel free to contact us before you use a service as we know of some that are not as reputable or have been known to overcharge. As of October of 2023, the normal rate for expediting through an agency should be around $150.00 per passport in addition to the regular US Passport Service processing and mailing fees.
What’s the difference between a passport book and a passport card? Can I fly to Europe with a passport card?
No, you cannot fly internationally with a passport card. The passport card was designed for the specific needs of northern and southern U.S. border communities with residents that cross the border frequently by land or sea. The passport book is the only document approved for international air travel.
Do my kids need a passport to travel internationally with me?

Do I need a passport for my cruise to the Southern Caribbean that leaves from Miami? What about Alaska?
Cruising with a passport vs a birth certificate is a question that has many answers. A majority of cruises travel roundtrip between US ports (i.e., Miami to Miami or Seattle to Seattle). The beauty of a cruise is the ability to visit several ports and/or countries. The need for a passport comes into play when an unexpected incident forces you to return home from the port and/or country that you may be visiting. When this happens, typically it will involve flying home from that port, which may be outside of the United States. You, and everyone flying with you, will need to have a passport.
We always refer cruisers to the travel documentation section on the cruise provider’s website. Avoid speculation that you may find on social media sites and chat rooms. Go to the source or ask your travel advisor to find the resource that answers this question for your specific cruise.
