Technology is changing how we cruise, and we are here to provide tips for planning a fantastic voyage.
As both ocean ships and river cruise boats return to near or full capacity, cruise lines use technology created during the pandemic in new and exciting ways. From smartphone apps to SkyLink fast Internet, change is fast-paced. But is technology taking away the spontaneous and relaxing vacation atmosphere? Perhaps, but we have the tips to stay ahead and plan the perfect sailing.
Smartphones Everywhere
Many book a vacation to get away from technology—especially their phones. For better or worse, many cruise lines embraced new smartphone apps during the return to cruising after the pandemic. When your cruise is booked, you will be prompted to download the cruise line’s smartphone app. Plug in your reservation number, and your new app comes to life. Here are just a few ways in which you will use your smartphone during a future cruise:
- On most cruise lines, you do not need to purchase the ship’s WiFi to use the phone app while onboard. This amenity is included in your cruise fare, and each person sailing in your cabin can download their phone application.
- To pre-book everything from dining reservations in specialty restaurants to shore excursions, spa days, and even entertainment—depending on the cruise line. Our tip is to become familiar with “opening” dates for dining, tours, and entertainment “tickets” for your booked cruise. Go ahead and book your favorites—even if you plan to make adjustments later.
- Book special promotional events and purchase merchandise that may only be available on the phone app before your cruise.
- Several cruise lines are now using the phone app to communicate with fellow cruisers while on the ship. You will find onboard texting fees range from no charge to $9.99 per cruiser.
- While on the ship, keep up with daily events by browsing the phone app.
- Use the cruise app to scan an on-ship QR code to view menus in casual bars or cafes.
- Want to order room service? You may now order room service directly from your cruise app on most cruise lines.
- Use the cruise app to check your onboard account at any time.
With a smartphone app, participating in your next cruise may start weeks to months before you step onboard the ship or river boat. (Although there is a push to technology on all cruise lines, most still provide traditional daily newsletters and alternative ways to book experiences upon request)
Onboard Interactive Screens
On your next cruise, you may notice interactive screens in the atriums, next to elevators, and even inside restaurants. The interactive screens range in size from tablets to large monitors.
Touch the screens to check the day’s itinerary, get weather updates, find deck maps, or even see any reservations in your favorite restaurant. In 2023, you will even find that casual ship restaurants use tablets to order from a quick-service menu.
Spend some time browsing the interactive screens on your next cruise. You may find some new tips for your specific ship or to use in ports.
Enjoy Improved Internet While Cruising
We all cruise to relax, but some may need to check in at the office or home. (Maybe even a quick “hello” to your pets back home!). In 2023, several international cruise lines have announced that ships in their fleet will be installing StarLink Internet in the coming months.
Over 900 cruise bloggers and vloggers recently sailed together on the NCL Getaway and documented the fun using StarLink Internet. Over the coming months, you will notice more cruise ships and lines adding StarLink to their list of amenities.
How much does it cost? The improved Internet will be included within exclusive packages on some lines. Other cruise lines charge for Internet packages, and the boosted, streaming StarLink service can range from $260-$380 per device for a 7-day cruise. But, imagine…perhaps the streaming Internet plan will allow you to work from any ship!
