Not Your Typical Euro Summer
By Nicole Yacano
Let’s be honest: when we picture a European summer, our minds tend to go straight to the classics — an Amalfi Coast escape, a villa in the South of France, or long, sangria-filled afternoons in Spain.
And while I’ll never say no to any of those, this summer I was craving something a little different.
Enter Switzerland.
I recently spent time exploring Graubünden, in eastern Switzerland, along with a few days in Zurich, and the trip completely changed the way I think about a European summer.

Switzerland has all the things we love about traveling through Europe — beautiful hotels, incredible food, charming towns — but the setting is entirely its own. Here, summer means dramatic Alpine landscapes, crystal-clear lakes, picturesque mountain villages, scenic train journeys, leisurely lunches, and plenty of time to enjoy where you are.
What I loved most was the variety. You can spend the morning hiking through the mountains, the afternoon relaxing at a beautiful spa, and the evening lingering over dinner with an unforgettable view. One day can be spent aboard one of the world’s most scenic train journeys, and the next exploring a tiny Alpine village or wandering the streets of Zurich.
There’s also something incredibly refreshing about the pace. Switzerland feels active without being exhausting, luxurious without feeling overly formal, and sophisticated while still feeling completely relaxed. And for those of us who have already checked a few of Europe’s classics off the list, that’s part of the appeal.
Switzerland feels like the next chapter.
It’s especially well-suited for a trip where the journey is just as memorable as the destination — a girls’ getaway, a mother-daughter trip, a milestone birthday, a couples’ escape, or simply a week away with friends.
Graubünden was a particular highlight for me. The region delivers that quintessential Swiss mountain scenery, but with a quieter, more off-the-radar feel than some of the country’s better-known destinations. Pair it with a few days in Zurich, and you have an itinerary that brings together nature, culture, wellness, food, and just the right amount of city energy.
So, if you’ve already checked Italy, France, and Spain off your bucket list — or you’re ready to experience Europe from a different perspective— put Switzerland on your list.
It may not be your typical Euro summer. And honestly, that’s exactly what makes it so special.

A beautiful way to enjoy the alpine scenery is by train. Tour Plan advisors can help you craft the perfect rail excursion with two options to fit any itinerary.
Want to add a Swiss rail adventure to your Graubünden visit? We suggest the Swiss Grand Train Tour for seven days of exploring the beautiful Swiss Alps. Is Zermatt on your bucket list? If so, this is the perfect way to include this charming town and its amazing views.
If your itinerary does not fit a seven-day rail excursion, we can also book an 8-hour day trip that showcases top scenery. Bring your camera for this day trip!
